Living as a Christ follower, in all its genuineness, requires us to take responsibility for our choices and actions. And last week we saw that though goals are good, having a process for those goals is even better! The process has a purpose.. Our Spiritual disciplines have a purpose.. They are not just crazy, old school patterns and rhythms..
Every spiritual discipline has an ultimate purpose to make you Christ like! Every spiritual discipline practised consistently helps us live a God-centred life.
While there are so many specific and unique habits and disciplines we can talk about. The one we gonna be talking about today is the prime one! In fact, it has a lot more sub-disciplines attached to it. We may get there if we have more time on these.
We’re gonna be looking at the spiritual discipline of— the word of God / the learning and application of scriptures in our daily lives
We think we hear the scriptures.. but are we listening to what the scriptures have to say to us? Merriam-Webster defines hearing as the “process, function, or power of perceiving sound; specifically: the special sense by which noises and tones are received as stimuli.”
Listening, on the other hand, means “to pay attention to sound; to hear something with thoughtful attention; and to give consideration.”
Living according to the scriptures is the most important discipline that we need to cultivate in our lives.
So hearing the Word of God is not merely passive listening, it is a Discipline to be cultivated. It is the thoughtful undivided attention given to the words being read. It is giving that careful consideration to God to speak into our lives. To put a check on our hearts and motives. To put into practise the truths the scriptures tell us about.
But then… the questions arises
Am I really required to start living my life according to something that was written so many thousand of years ago?
When we learn to value and treasure the scriptures, we begin to cultivate an appetite to apply them in our lives. What you hold of high value in your life always finds your priority and time. When we value it above everything else.. When we learn to apply the power of the scriptures in our lives, we are able to live our lives to the fullest when we treasure Gods word!
A few reasons why every Christ follower must treasure the scriptures and have them on top priority;
The bible is God’s authoritative word. It must have the final say in our lives.
The bible is God’s reliable word. It is the timeless absolute truth in the changing times and cultures.
The bible is God’s powerful word. It is the life-giving source for our heart and soul.
The more you treasure Godʼs word, the more radiant you are in life!
